Summer Project
Open Air Museum

As a first project, we were assigned to design an open air museum which will exhibit five different buildings from different country including one from Illinois.

The site was given at Wayne state fitzgerrel state park Which is a  Recreation area covering 3,300-acre (13.4 km²) state park bordering Rend Lake near Benton, Illinois.

I chose to collect spiritual buildings which are chapels and temple, all designed as a metaphor to light where Light, shadow and reflection has played an important role in the building design.  The spiritual buildings included Ron champ church form France, Thorn crown from Arkansas, USA,  Chapel, Lotus Temple form Delhi, Church of Light from Japan, Chapel of St Ignatius from Seattle, USA, Jubilee church from Italy.

The main idea is about how the site embraces these spiritual buildings and makes visitors the feel of sense of place and light.  visitors move through the space and experience the architecture; the light, shadow, reflection, the color, material and above all, the nature.

Fall Project
Community Housing, Brazil

The Design Studio project was to create a legacy plan for Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, where AECOM won the competition for the master plan design of Rio 2016 Olympic Park.

The master plan was designed in a group of three members and the individual project constituted two programs either a hotel or a housing, which in itself is a  the entity.

The program was based upon an overall site area of approximately 150,000 square meters. The entire master plan constituted one hotel, multiple  residential, child care, health clinic, school, small retail and restaurant, community recreation center, police substation, multiple park, playground and parking.

Brazilian are fun loving people who love to hang out and socialize as much as possible. They highly praised friendship and hospitality and have a strong family value and social interaction. Studying the nature of Brazilian, their culture and the climate are the point of departure for my design.

The buildings are designed in a cluster with pockets of green spaces in-between and a central open space as communal space. A sense of community is intended to design along with the apartment units.

It was an opportunity to explore how to live without a car to see how transportation affects planning and the architectural decision, and the design of our environments and ultimately how we spend our time live our lives.

Spiritual refuge for the tired mind:

A place to:

Rest      Express    Live     Celebrate   Venerate        Contemplate

Most people, when they suffer from physical pain, tension or depression, seek a place or a medium to

alleviate their pain. They go to various temples and religious places to worship and are in search of

inner happiness. Ultimately, what one finds is that, the holy happiness lies in the peace of mind. And

the peace of mind lies in spirituality and meditation.

This thesis proposes to develop a spiritual center which will offer spiritual living, teachings and practices that have the ability to transform personal lives.

For a healthy body and mind, spirituality plays a bigger role. Spiritual practices foster feelings of optimism and hope, promote healthy behavior, reduce feelings of depression and anxiety and encourages a sense of relaxation.  People belonging to any society, race or religion have some kind of faith. And at a point they want to spend some time in peace and purity away from the temporal world.

The project concentrates in providing space to rest, space to contemplate, space to realize and a space to celebrate. This place will provide spiritual refuge for tired minds as most of people are in present context.
